My yard is full of Hickory, Walnut, and Oak trees which all beckon an abundance of birds including every type of woodpecker there is.  Among my favorites is the Downey Woodpecker. This perky little bird is very active and able to compete for the prime feeding areas.  I thoroughly enjoy watching the birds but also enjoy painting them.  They are a challenge in all mediums but I find a certain control and softness is accomplished in using the technique of blending the transparent watercolor with gouache in painting the birds.
