"The Fisheries" was painted "plein air", which is a French term which simply means, painting outside in open air, or as we always called it, painting on location. I once had a younger artist ask me, "When you're painting plein air, what do you look for in your subject matter?" I answered, "Well, being one of the ole timers,, I think the first thing to look for is a nice shady area to set up my painting table and get real comfortable, then look around for something to paint while I'm there". Just joking of course, but in this case I did come across that very thing. It was a beautiful warm spring morning along the Gulf just east of Port St Joe, Florida, where I found this shady lane at the end of a little cove with beautiful fishing boats moored at a rustic old pier. My wife was nearby sitting in our van which was parked right behind me. She was enjoying her book and pausing only long enough to prepare us a nice picnic lunch as I spent the entire day toiling away at my painting. I love this job. |
